Industrial Tourism

South West is the area for « art de Vivre » but it is also the area where work and ingenuity had always allowed men to  challenge industry and technology; as proven by renowned named such as Airbus, Laguiole or Roquefort, but also, even more recently, by  activities linked to new technologies: polymers, neurosciences and lasers,  as shown by the Laser Megajoule set up near Bordeaux.

South West holds the leading position in various industries, such as aeronautics (Airbus, Dassault, Snecma….) food-processing (Filière Vin,  Fromagerie des Chaumes - Etorki-, Société, Maïsadour, Hennessy…) the wood  industry, (Smurfit).

The presence of the greatest production units is often linked to the presence of former small-scale or pre-industrial setting up, having developed on location an experimented and skilled workforce.

The Aquitaine and Midi Pyrenees regions have kept an important network of these “historic” industries, deeply influenced by local culture and ancient handicraft, where know-how and journeymen’s experience are essential: espadrilles in the Pays Basque ,cooperage in Cognac, ostreiculture on the basin of Arcachon, glass-making in Albi, the “Blue” of Lectoure….this isn’t an  exhaustive  list!
